Will of William Gould - 1st February 1622
In the name of God Amen the first daie of ffebruarie in the year of our lord god one thousand six hundred twentie and two I William Gould of Wimborne Minster in the countie of Dorset Lynnen Draper being sicke in bodie but of perfect mynde and memorie thankes be given to almighty god revokeing all other and former wills by me att any tyme heretofore made doe make and ordaine this my last will and testament in manner and forme following viz
Imprimis I comend my soule into the handes of almightie god my mercifull and loveing father hopeing assuredly through the ?merritte? of Christ Jesus my Lorde and Saviour to be made xxxxxx of that blessed life to come in the kingdome of heaven and my bodie I comitt unto the earth from whence it came in sure and certaine hope that at the great daie of the generall resurrection I shall reclaime it again a perfect imortall and glorious bodie.
Itm I give unto my brother John Gould tenn poundes to be paid unto hym within three months next after my decease. Itm I give unto him my best cloake and my best suite of other apparrell both of lynnen and woollen and all the money which he doth owe ?unto? mee
Itm I give my brother Thomas Gould fiftie pounde to be paid hym in twelve monethe after my decease.
Itm I give unto Thomas Gould Robert Gould John Gould Ann Gould Jone Gould Marie Gould and Christian Gould the children of my brother Thomas Gould Tenn poundes apiece to be paid unto them at there severall ages of one and twentie yeares, and my will and meaninge is that the said legacies shall remaine untill that tyme in the handes of Mr John Harbin of Wareham one of myne Executores and that he shall give sufficient xxxx to myne Overseere that he shall imploye the said legacies to and for the best benifitt of the said children untill their said ages and that he shall paie unto the said children their said legacies with all and singular the ?increase? thereof att their said severall ages of one and twentie yeares.
Itm my will is that my brothers sonnes shall not receave their porcons until they come to the age of foure and twentie yeares and my will and meaning further is that if either of the said children shall die before he or she shall come to the age of one and twentie yeares the maydens and twentie four yeares the boyes his or her portion soe dyeing shall remaine unto the rest of the said children surviving equally to be divided between them.
Itm my will is that my brother Thomas's daughters shall not receive their legacies until two years after my decease although of full years.
Itm I give unto Joane Gould daughter of my said brother Thomas Gould Tenn pounds to be paid unto her in ?five? yeares after my decease the same in the mean time to remaine and be imployed as aforesaid the said John Harbin giveing in xxxxxxxx to myne Overseere for this legacie as for the other legacies aforesaid.
Itm I give unto Henry Gould the sonne of my said brother Thomas Gould tenn pounds to be paid unto him within one year after my decease.
Itm I give unto my sister Christian Tilsed Tenn pounds to be paid unto her at the end of eighteene monethes next after my decease and if she die within that time then the same to remain unto her sonne James Tilsed.
Itm I give unto her daughter Marie Tilsed tenn pounds to be paide unto her likewise att the end of ?xxiij? monethes next after my decease and if she die within that time unmarried then the said tenn pounds shall remaine to her two sisters equallie to be devided betweene them.
Itm I give unto my cozen Christian Norris twentie ?markes? to be paid unto her within eighteene monethes after my decease.
Itm I give unto William Norris my godsonne five poundes.
Itm I give unto my cozen Agnes Clench tentie poundes to be paide unto her att the ende of one year after my decease and if she die within that tyme the same shall remaine unto her children equallie to be devided betweene them.
Itm I give unto my cozen Marie Hallet fiftie pounds to be paide unto her at the end of two yeares next after my decease.
Itm I give unto my sister Ann thirtie pounds the said thirtie pounds to be paid unto her at the end of two yeares next after my decease and if she die within that tyme then the saide thirtie poundes to remaine unto her children or childe if she shall then have any. The thirtie pounds which I owed my brother William Boulton for my sisters porcon of marriage money I have paid him.
Itm I give unto my cozen Elizabeth Hallet sixe pounds to be paid unto her att the end of eighteene monethes next after my decease and if she die within that tyme the same to remaine unto her children or childe. [Does this definitely mean she has one already??? But Ann doesn’t?]
Itm I give unto the poore of the parish of Wimborne Minster five ?markes? to be distributed unto them after my funerall according to the discretion of mine executors.
Itm this which ?crost? ?forth? xxx the money xxxx the ?corporaron? ffoure pound I delivered to Mr ?Stone? at two several tymes fourteen shillings I paid for them for the ?Thornes? [Horse???] and ?Carriage? unto John ?Moorde? of ?WSourreborne?, eleven shillings for the horses and carriage and three shillings to ?Josias? ?Harte? and his partner for making of Mr ?Bournes? garden hedge xxxxx I paide unto Mr John Stroude att Blanford att a commission ten shillings somme xxxxxx it ffive pounde and four shillings xxx for my Executors each xxxx must have from them.
Itm I give unto my cozen Lewis Tilsed tentie pounds to be paide unto him at the end of one year next after my decease and if he die within that tyme then the said tentie pounds to remaine unto his brother James Tilsed.
Itm I give unto my cozen James Tilsed twentie markes to be paide unto him at the end of one year and halfe next after my decease and if he die within that tyme then the said twentie markes shall remaine unto his sister Marie.
Itm I give unto the poore of Sturminster Marshall ffortie shillings and to the poore of Beere Regis ffortie shillings and to the poore of Tollpudle twentie shillings to be respectively paide unto the Churchwardens of the said places within one moneth next after my decease.
Itm I give unto my cozen Marie /Hallet all that my messuage or tenement backside garden and houses situat in Wimborne Minster aforesaid which I doe hold by lease from Mr Studley with all and singular the appurtenances for and duringe all the residue of my terme therein if shee so long live and if shee dye before the expiracon of the said terme thenI give the remainder of the said messuage or tenement backside garden and outhouses with the appurtenances and all my right title interest terme of yeares and demande of in and to the same then to come and unexpired unto my cozen James Tilsed.
Itm I give unto the said James Tilsed all that my house wherein I now dwell which I hold by lease from Sir John Hanham Knight with all and singular the appurtenances for and during the xxxx of twelve years of the ?terme which I have? therein next after my decease and after the expiration of the said twelve yeares I give the same house with the appurtenances and all my right title interest terme of yeares and demande of in and to the same unto my cozen Robert Gould for and during all the residue of the said terme that I have therein if he soe longe live. But if he die before the expiration of the said term then I give the same house and premisses and all the residue of my terme therein then to come and expired after the death of the said Robert unto my cozen James Tilsed if he so longe live, but if he shall dye before the expiration of the saide terme then I give the said house and premisses and all my right title interest terme of yeares and demandes of in and to the same after his death unto my sister ?Xure? dureing all the residue of the said terme then to come and unexpired.
Itm I give unto my cozen James Tilsed all that my shopp and two roomes over head which I hold by agreement xxxxx lease or leases from Mr Stone Mr Newborough and Sir John Hanham and the Churchwardens of Wimborne Minster with the appurtenances for and dureing all the terme I have therein if he so long live but if he dye before the expiration of the said terme then I give the same from and after his death unto my cozen Thomas Gould for and dureing the residue of the said terme then to come and unexpired.
Itm I give unto my cozen the widdowe ?Ann?Fdriest?Foriest? of Beere Regis two and twenty shillings to make her a ?gossome?gowne?
Itm I doe desire Mr Bonnes? to speak att my funerall and I doe appointe that there shall be bought a pulpitt cloath of a yard and halfe of the price of fifteene shillings the yarde or thereabout against my funerall which cloth I doe give unto the said Mr ?Bonnes?
Itm I give unto Mr ?SDanne? twentie shillings and the money which he doth owe me and if the said Mr ?SDaine? shall before my decease paie unto me the money which he doth owe unto me and be not otherwise indebted unto me at my decease then I give the said Mr ?SDaine? ?tentie? shillings more to be paid respectively witin three moneths next after my decease.
Itm I give unto Thomas Norman ffive markes to be paid within twelve moneth after my decease and my meaning is that my cozen Mr ?Disuis? Bonde shall have the managing of this money until the said Thomas Norman shall come to the age of one and twentie yeares provided alwaies that if the said Thomas Norman shall dye before he come to the age aforesaid then the said ffive markes shalbe and remaine unto his sister Martha Norman. Itm I give unto the said Martha two ?pieces? of two and twentie shillings apiece to be paid unto her at the age of one and twentie yeares and in the meane while to be imployed by myne Executors for her profitt.
Itm I give to Mr Norman's youngest daughter ?tentie? shillings to be paid unto her att age of one and twentie yeares to be likewise imployed by myne Executors untill that tyme for her profitt.
Item I give unto each of William Boulton's children two and twentie shillings a piece to be paide unto them within eighteene moneths after my decease.
Itm I give unto Mr Robert ?Hinch?Clench and Robert Comden twentie shillings apiece to be paid unto each of them att the end of three moneths next after my decease if they doe not dye before that tyme.
Itm I give unto those that shall ringe my knell att Beere tenn shillings and to those that shall ring my knell at Tollpudle six shillings eight pence and the like some to those that shall ringe my knell at Sturminster Marshall and to those that shall ring my knell at Wimborne Minster tenn shillings where I would only only have the Great Bell ring'd.
Itm I give to old Joan Roberte of ?Draford/Canford? six shillings eight pence and my Will and meaning is that myne Executors shall dispose of all such provision of meate and drinke and ?serve all att? the tyme of my decease as they shall thinke fitt ?increasing? those of my househould after my decease.
Itm I give unto John Hallit my cozen ffive pounds to be paid unto him within eighteene monethes next after my decease.
Itm I give unto Mr William Stone five and twentie shillings where with I would have him make a ringe the same to be paide within three moneths next after my decease.
Item I doe nominate and appointe my welbeloved ffreinde Mr John Harbin of Wareham and my Cozen Mr Lewis Tilsed to be mine executors of this my last will and testament and for their paines I give them two pieces of two and twentie shillings each piece my will is to give each of my Executors two pieces of two and twentie shillings for his paines and if either of them refuse to take uppon him the execution of this my Will his said legacie to remaine unto the other of them not refusing the same for the share ?goe/get? and expenses of the dinner at my funerall I leave it to the discretion of my executors and others my good friends and I doe desire to be buried in the Chancell of the parish church of Wimborne Minster aforesaid at the end of Mr Norman's grave ffor with my buriall there I give ffoure and ffortie shillings to the Governors of the ?possessione? ?revenecves? and goode of the free grammar schoole aforesaid [????] and I doe will and appointe that myne Executors shalbe allowed out of myne estate all their charges and expenses in proving and executing this my Will and xxxxxxx them ?about?above?
and I doe appointe my welbeloved freinde Mr Anthony ?Knight?, John ?Maior?, William Boulton and the said Thomas ?Bournes? to be mine Overseers and I do desire them to see that this my will be duely performed and I doe give unto each of them for their paines herein two and twentie shillings.
Itm I give unto my Cozen Marie Hallet all and singular the househould stuff and implements of household remayning and being in my xxxxx house wherein Mr Ettrick dwelleth.
Itm I give unto my Cozen Mathew Harte twentie shillinges to be paid in three moneths after my decease
all the reste of my goods rights creditte and chattells whatsoever not otherwise given and bequeathed my debtes legacies funerall expenses and other charges before mentioned being deducted I wholie give and bequeath unto my sister ?Ann?Luce? and my cozens Marie Hallet and James Tilsed equally to be devided betweene them
In wittnes whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale the daie and yeare first above written sealed published declared and delivered by William Gould for his last Will and Testament in the presence of ?Able Gellie/Sellie?, Philipp Taylor, Anthonie Waight, Thomas ?Wilkins? The ?eighth? day of Aprill/August xxxx xxx dnie I William Gould doe declare that this shall be my last will and testament in manner and fore as I have xxxected with my owne hand xxxx xx xxxxxx Stone, Myles ?Bonens? John Flayen, Lewis Tilsed, John Rogers, Henry Way.
A codicil or schedule annexed to the last will and testament of me William Gould of Wimborne Minster the Countie of Dorset Lynnen Draper soe devise and declare by me to be ?part? of my last will and testament the tenth day of May Anno Dni 1624.
Whereas by my said last will and testament in writeing under my hand and seal bearing date the ffirst daie of ffebruarie in the year of our Lord God 1622 I have given unto my sister ?Ann?/Luce? Boulton the some of thirtie pounds of this thirtie pounds I doe give her only tenn pounds and doe revoke twentie pounds of the said legacie which twentie pounds I doe give and bequeath unto Jane Boulton her daughter to be paide att the end of the age of one and twentie yeares in the meane time to be imployed to the benefitt of the child at the discretion of my executors and if the said Jane Boulton die unmarried before she come to the age of one and twentie yeares then the said twentie pounds shall remaine to the next childe of the said ?Anne? Boulton if she shall have anie or if she shall have none other childe then it shall remaine unto the said ?Ann? Boulton herself.
Also I doe give and bequeath unto Thomas Tilsed my goddsonne ffive pounds to be paide at the end of the age of one and twentie yeares and to be imployed to the benefitt of the childe untill he come to the age of one and twentie yeares at the discretion of myne executors ?as?before? William Gould.
This schedule of codicill was subscribed sealed and delivered by the within named William Gould the tenth daie of May in the yeare of our Lord god one thousand six hundred twentie and ffoure and was by him published and declared to be ?parcel? of his last will and testament being read unto him before then sealing thereof in the presence of John Rogers, Alex ?Shennie/Thennie?Henrie? ?Waye?Clew? Thomas Clench, Christopher ?Lonhell? the mark of Mathew ?Harte?

A codicil or schedule annexed to the last will and testament of me William Gould of Wimborne Minster the Countie of Dorset Lynnen Draper soe devise and declare by me to be ?part? of my last will and testament the tenth day of May Anno Dni 1624.
Whereas by my said last will and testament in writeing under my hand and seal bearing date the ffirst daie of ffebruarie in the year of our Lord God 1622 I have given unto my sister ?Ann?/Luce? Boulton the some of thirtie pounds of this thirtie pounds I doe give her only tenn pounds and doe revoke twentie pounds of the said legacie which twentie pounds I doe give and bequeath unto Jane Boulton her daughter to be paide att the end of the age of one and twentie yeares in the meane time to be imployed to the benefitt of the child at the discretion of my executors and if the said Jane Boulton die unmarried before she come to the age of one and twentie yeares then the said twentie pounds shall remaine to the next childe of the said ?Anne? Boulton if she shall have anie or if she shall have none other childe then it shall remaine unto the said ?Ann? Boulton herself.
Also I doe give and bequeath unto Thomas Tilsed my goddsonne ffive pounds to be paide at the end of the age of one and twentie yeares and to be imployed to the benefitt of the childe untill he come to the age of one and twentie yeares at the discretion of myne executors ?as?before? William Gould.
This schedule of codicill was subscribed sealed and delivered by the within named William Gould the tenth daie of May in the yeare of our Lord god one thousand six hundred twentie and ffoure and was by him published and declared to be ?parcel? of his last will and testament being read unto him before then sealing thereof in the presence of John Rogers, Alex ?Shennie/Thennie?Henrie? ?Waye?Clew? Thomas Clench, Christopher ?Lonhell? the mark of Mathew ?Harte?
